Local History

Research over the last few years into the history of Thurcaston has revealed such a quantity of material to be shared that putting even a small percentage of it on this site will take some time, so please be patient. And if a particular section is not of interest, do move on to another. Our plan is to start with a chronological overview, then have sections on.

  • the Church and its graveyard as well as the Methodist chapel
  • the community and its occupations down the centuries (including the Mill)
  • education (especially the Richard Hill School)
  • population changes
  • buildings, trackways and bridges
  • amenities (past and present)
  • miscellaneous discoveries

and possibly to add

  • transcripts of the parish birth, marriage and burial records (from 1561 to around 1900), and
  • the census returns(1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901)

If you would like to comment on any of this, you are most welcome to phone either Margaret Greiff (0116 235 0826) or Brenda Hooper (0116 220 3046)
