Mrs Kate Fisher

Picture of Kate Fisher at the 1935 carnival

My grandmother was a wonderful woman. She died in 1935, aged 70.

I was doing exams at the time, the "11 plus" and I was distressed of course.

We lived in two houses, that had been knocked into one. One door in "Garden Street" and the other in "Havelock Cottages". If a neighbour was needing help, she was there.

She was a midwife too. Rising early one morning to make sure a carnival project was finished, she had a bad fall, breaking her arm in several places.

She was treated at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, for which she was grateful. The words on her sling say it all ("In aid of the Leicester Royal Infirmary").

She collected rolls of "crepe" paper, wooden hoops and lengths of wire. She spent hours making flowers and actually decorated the "Carnival Queen's" vehicle.

To make sure we were in our home a reasonable time in the evening my gran would come to the public park in her black dress and wearing an apron too plus carrying a long cane. She never used it. In the photo with Gran are my brother and sister, Ray and Mary.

Another character in Thurmaston was the lovely Kate Ross. Everyone knew Kate.
