Policeman![]() Houses seen from the churchyard at Waltham on the Wolds
Dr Atkinson: Sergeant Rickett’s was, when I came in 1934, I should think he weighed about 18 stone, a big man, very likeable. He never had any trouble in the village because I should think if any boys got into trouble he’d give them a thick ear, or a belt with his stick, whatever he’d got, and there was no trouble at all, and he wouldn’t take them down to Melton. He was absolutely first class if there was anything that really mattered, I did know that, if there was anything really bad he was absolutely tops. If it was something like that, or if I’d forgotton my [driving] licence, he’d come round and remind you, you see, and you’d say ‘I’m very sorry’ and that was that. So, the good village policeman was worth his weight in gold. ©EMOHA Last Updated Thu, 26 Oct, 2006. |
