![]() WAR MEMORIAL This page is an extract from 'Historical Notes on Sharnford and Wigston Parva' by Rev A. W. Fothergill 1928 WAR MEMORIAL (Chapter 6) - the Great War 1914-1918We must not close this account of Sharnford and Wigston Parva without putting on record a note of appreciation to those who responded to their country's call in the hour of her distress during the Great War 1914-1918. Over 60 went from the Parish out of a population of about 450. We are proud of them and of those 13 men who willingly laid down their lives in the cause of justice. Their memory will ever remain green in the life and history of Sharnford and Wigston Parva, for in the Autumn of 1919 a largely attended meeting was held to decide about the Parish War Memorial. It was unanimously decided that all Parishioners should support the fund for the erection of an Obelisk at the corner of the Churchyard. It was unveiled on March 20th, 1920, by Major Griffiths, D.S.O., after a solemn and impressive Service in Church. The inscription of the Obelisk reads as follows: In loving memory of the men who fell in the Great War 1914-18. W. H. Brown should read W. H. Bonser. The error in names crept in by mistake, and apologies are made to the relatives for it. Last Updated . |
